Skills and Work-Based Learning

Skills and Work-Based Learning

Employers within this sector are predominantly privately owned training organisations, assessors and colleges.  Word-based learning (WBL) is a strategy used by educational establishments to provide students with work experience.  Within this environment, they work to improve their employability by upgrading technical and academic skills. As the student adds to their range of skills and knowledge, employers are provided with a pool of candidates from which to choose.  For those looking to work in a certain sector who do not have the necessary knowledge, work-based learning courses fill the gap. Students taking part benefit from improving their attitude to work whilst improving their competencies in specific fields. WBL courses may take the form of work placements, apprenticeships or internships. For those who prefer to learn in a hands-on practical environment, provides an invaluable resource.

Trainers within this sector provide young people with opportunities that they may have missed. For those who may have not done so well academically, these types of work-based learning opportunities equip them with real-world skills, making them imminently employable. Training schemes are designed to bring together interested employers with potential employees, imbibing them with in-depth knowledge and usable expertise.

For those looking for employment within the WBL sector, there is a broad range of roles available. Whether you choose to work with a private training provider, college, employer provider or end-point assessment organisation, you will be communicating regularly with both learners and employers. Roles include trainers, assessors and management positions.

Suitable candidates will need to have the ability to build strong relationships with students as well as placement providers and educational establishments. You will also need relevant experience in the field of study.  For example, students with placements within the automotive industry would need to be assigned to a WBLmanager, trainer or assessor who has experience in the same sector.
