Housing Association

Housing associations comprise not-for-profit set-ups that own, manage and let housing accommodation. The goal is to make housing available to those who would normally struggle to afford it, focusing on a select group of people or a specific geographical area.

As well as maintaining the properties, the organisation is responsible for communicating with tenants and dealing with any issues or complaints.  Rental monies are ploughed back into the business to help buy and maintain the property.

Jobs within the housing association sector are varied. You may find yourself working as a housing officer or manager. Duties will vary according to your level of responsibility, but you will almost certainly need to liaise with tenants regularly. You may also get involved with assessing tenancy applications, allocating property, inspecting properties and dealing with anti-social behaviour.

The availability of job posts will very much depend upon the location and size of the operation.  One thing all housing associations have in common is that everyone works as part of a team, sharing duties between them and overseen by a manager. The larger the organisation the more properties and tenants it will handle.

Candidates applying for jobs within housing should be good organisers with essential time management skills, good at working under pressure, able to negotiate and analyse and able to communicate with people from all walks of life. You don’t have to have qualifications although it may help put you ahead of other candidates if you do have skills or prior experience. As you move up through the organisation, taking on more management-led roles, then further training is likely to be required.
